Coast Guard Maritime Safety Programs Design to Keep Coastal Workers Safe
Most people fail to realize just how dangerous it can be to work on a seafaring vessel. When joining the Coast Guard, you will be trained on how to properly handle accidents at sea. There are a variety of other privatized industries out on the sea who do not have the training programs the United States Military can offer. Various parts of maritime law dictate how employers are supposed to train seamen on how to handle an emergency while on the water. Below is some information on the various programs out there designed to educate and keep seamen safe while on the job.
The Establishment of USGC Maritime Worker Safety Programs
Back in the 1800s, Congress was forced to take a long hard look at the maritime law and the safety of seamen. After a number of deaths and accidents at sea, Congress introduced the Marine Safety and Environmental protection manual. Many Jones act lawyer firms are quite familiar with this manual due to the guidelines it established in regards to seaman safety. This manual also explains in detail the types of incidents that led to the loss of life. As the years have gone by, various legislatures have developed a number of safety programs to ensure maritime workers know the risks when going into a job at sea.
The Marine Inspection Program
When a vessel is going out to sea and taking a number of workers with it, a marine inspection will have to be done. Jones Act law and other federal regulations have established a set of guidelines regarding what a vessel must have in order for it to be deemed seaworthy. If a vessel does not meet the standards set by these laws, their request for work at sea will be denied until all infractions are fixed.
The Marine Licensing Program
The Marine Licensing Program was set up to provide seamen and mariners with the training they need to stay safe while at sea. Each of the training programs set up via Jones Act law and other programs issues credits to seamen who go through them and pass a written test. With the knowledge bestowed upon them via these training courses, seaman and mariners will know how to handle emergencies and mishaps while aboard a vessel.
Port Safety and Security
The Port Safety and Security program uses a number of post-security measures to both control hazardous substances at sea and to ensure the safety of all vessels they come in contact with. Since September 11th, the Port Safety and Security program has been on high alert in regards to the smuggling of possibly harmful materials being used to hurt Americans. The members of the Port Safety and Security team take their jobs very seriously, and for good reason.
When involved in an accident at sea, you will need to contact us for help. We will be able to let you know what your rights are and can help you to file suit against the company who owned the vessel you were injured on.
