What is Risperdal?
Risperdal, also known as risperdone, is a drug manufactured by Johnson & Johnson used to treat bi polar disorder, schizophrenia, dementia, and sometimes autism. It is an antipsychotic. Serious side effects of the drug include fever, stiff muscles, restless muscle movements, drooling, tremors and shaking, seizures, and chills.
The drug was approved by the FDA for adults, but it has been used to treat children who have bi-polar disorders, autism, irritability, aggression or other behavioral disorders
Risperdal has been known to cause gynecomastia in young adult males and male children. Gynecomastia is a condition the causes abnormal breast growth or enlargement due to an increase in the protein hormone prolactin. Risperdal blocks the release of dopamine in the brain, which can in turn cause the pituitary gland to release prolactin in some cases. This release of prolactin leads to gynecomastia in young males. Gynecomastia caused by Risperdal often requires surgery to correct.
